Aditya Belwadi, PhD is a Research Scientist II for biomechanics research at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). In 2011, he received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on aortic injury mechanics from Wayne State University in Detroit and began his research career at CHOP. As a post-doctoral fellow at the center from 2011-2013 he was instrumental in developing advanced finite element computational modeling capabilities at the Center; as of 2015, he also leads the Center’s Child Passenger Safety research team and is a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST).

An internationally recognized expert on injury biomechanics, injury causation and the effectiveness of safety products for children, Dr. Belwadi's research efforts have been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and several corporate entities in the field of automotive safety. His work focuses on the biomechanics of pediatric injury for the development of new safety designs and biofidelic child anthropomorphic dummies, quantifying mechanical response of the pediatric thorax during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in MRI systems, and evaluating positive reinforcement feedback for teenage drivers using simulated driving assessments. 

Prior to his arrival at CIRP, Dr. Belwadi studied the biomechanics of aortic injury in motor vehicle and racing crashes, including the biomechanics of the cadaveric lumbar spine at the Advanced Human Modeling Laboratory at Wayne State University. He was also instrumental in developing the adult 50th percentile human finite element (FE) model for injury prediction and was involved in several projects involving FE models and Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATD) for injury prediction and mitigation strategies.

Dr. Belwadi has presented both nationally and internationally, and has been recognized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for his work.  He received the prestigious Ralph H. Isbrandt Automotive Innovation Engineering Award in 2012 from SAE for his work on lumbar spine mechanics. He can be contacted at
