Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Student (Summer 2018)

"This summer has been filled with new experiences and ample opportunities thanks to the Center for Injury Research and Prevention (CIRP) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. I had the pleasure of working with the Behavioral Science Team, under Dr. Catherine McDonald and Divya Jain, on examining the effects of concussion on attention in adolescent driving. At the beginning of the program, I conducted many literature reviews to understand the logistics of concussion and clinical assessment, as well as the mechanisms of technology like Tobii Pro Glasses 2 and the Simulated Driving Assessment (SDA). I learned how to operate this equipment and gained skills in data coding and management by using programs such as Microsoft excel, REDCap, and VLC media player.

I am currently a rising second year Pharmacy student at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. I applied to this internship because I have an interest in pursuing a career pathway within the realms of research. Prior to this internship, I didn’t have much research experience. With the guidance of my principal investigator (PI) and the peer mentorship program, I gained an abundance of knowledge and skills needed in research in such a short period of time. Every day I was learning something new and applying that knowledge to my project. What makes this program unique is the supporting environment, the enriching REU learning experience, and the chance to work closely with different perspectives in research. I truly enjoyed my experience here and spending my summer in Philadelphia. This internship advanced my academic learning and will continue to benefit my future endeavors as a Pharmacy student. I couldn’t be more grateful for the knowledge I’ve gained and the connections I’ve cultivated throughout the summer with people who share my interests. Thank you CIRP!"
