Research Experiences for Undergraduates Student (Summer 2024)
"I had the privilege of working with Dr. Daniel Corwin, Melissa Godfrey, MPH, and the Minds Matter
Concussion team on their current research in reducing concussion outcomes and providing
equitable pediatric care for mTBI patients in the Philadelphia area.
This summer, I was able to create my own research question on whether the Child Opportunity
Index contributed to the likelihood of having persistent post concussive symptoms (PPCS).
Additionally, I assisted the Minds Matter team and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on their
project to create a risk stratification tool that will assist primary care providers in concussion
diagnosis in order to reduce the number of patients that experience PPCS.
From this research and from the influence of the Minds Matter team, I have been taught so
many valuable lessons, such as how to work on a professional team and the entire process of data
analytics -- from choosing the variables of interest to cleaning the data and interpreting the results. Lastly, I got to experience my first research project focusing on human models.
Meeting all of the amazing and intelligent people at CHOP, while also having the patient and
kind guidance of my CHOP mentors, have made me decide to jump-start my search
for a graduate school where I can continue to apply my newly acquired skills and do research
on concussions and other traumatic brain injuries."
