CHOP Mentor
CIRP Summer Intern (2019)
"In the summer of 2019, I was an intern at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention (CIRP) under the mentorship of Dr. Nancy Kassam-Adams and Kristen Kohser, MSW, LSW. I spent the majority of my time at CIRP coding videos of ER training simulations for trauma-informed care (TIC) and family-centered care (FCC) behaviors. Throughout my time on this project, I helped Dr. Kassam-Adams further develop the coding scheme for the study.
Prior to my experience at CIRP, I wasn’t passionate about any part of the research process. Following my internship, I had a greater understanding of and appreciation for research, especially the hands-on nature of it at CIRP. CIRP’s 'research to action to impact' commitment and diverse team of experts made it a memorable place to work.
Following my internship, I returned to McGill University and got more involved in research on campus. My primary focus throughout the semester was in a lab that looked at student motivation and identity in STEM courses with a personal focus on the effects of emotional and psychological issues on motivational outcomes. I graduated from McGill in the fall of 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
In January 2020, I returned to CIRP as a Clinical Research Coordinator. I am happy to continue my work with Dr. Kassam-Adams. This time my focus is primarily on a web-based screening tool to monitor children’s recovery, in addition to the Prospective Studies of Acute Child Trauma & Recovery Data Archive. I am grateful for the opportunities CHOP has given me and am excited to continue working at CIRP."
