CIRP REU Training Testimonial - Mirjam Keochakian
CHOP Mentor(s):
Aimee Palumbo, PhD, MPH
Outside of working at CIRP, I was able to shadow doctors at CHOP, as well as talk to graduate students and fellow CIRP employees about combining my passion for medicine with research. I am very grateful for the experiences I gained and the connections I made here at CIRP. Many thanks to everyone who made this summer unforgettable.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Student (Summer 2018)

"This summer, I worked under the mentorship of Dr. Aimee Palumbo as a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) student at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention (CIRP) where I was part of the Epidemiology Team. My work consisted of coming up with a personal research question linked to bike share crash numbers and to conduct a literature review on my topic. I found publicly available data, such as crash counts, bicycle counts, bicycle share counts, and complete streets availabilities, then I examined the data to see whether bicycle use was associated with the crash numbers. I learned several new functions in Excel and was able to see a project through from start to finish.

I am a rising senior at Mount Holyoke College where I major in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Post-graduation, I am interested in working in research and then continue on to a MD-PhD program. Outside of working at CIRP, I was able to shadow doctors at CHOP, as well as talk to graduate students and fellow CIRP employees about combining my passion for medicine with research. I am very grateful for the experiences I gained and the connections I made here at CIRP. Many thanks to everyone who made this summer unforgettable."
