Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Student (Summer 2018)

"During my summer at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention (CIRP), as a Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) intern, I worked under the mentorship of Dr. Joel Fein and Dr. Leah Brogan. My research experience exposed me to a career in big data analysis and retrospective design. This summer I spent my time extracting data from the Behavioral Health Screening-Emergency Department (BHS-ED) and designing a study to analyze the bullying and suicidality data. During this process, I learned how to run statistical tests in SPSS (e.g. logistic regression and chi-square test of independence) and how to communicate the results effectively to an interdisciplinary audience. I was also granted the opportunity to speak with India Azzinaro, the outreach coordinator at the Lutheran Settlement House, about intimate partner violence programming.

Currently, I am a senior at Xavier University of Louisiana, pursuing a BA in Psychology. The REU program has solidified my decision to continue my education and obtain my PhD in Counseling Psychology. Through this program, I have gained professional and personal skills that will better prepare me for my future. Lastly, I am excited to also be continuing to work with Dr. Fein and Dr. Brogan in the fall of 2018."
