Research Experiences for Undergraduates Student (Summer 2023)
"Throughout my REU internship this summer, I was able to expand my knowledge and improve my skillset in so many ways. I spent the summer as a part of both the Additive Manufacturing for Pediatrics 3D Lab at CHOP (CHAMP) and the McKay Orthopaedic Research Lab at the University of Pennsylvania. My focus has been working on designing and developing 3-D printed biofidelic models of pediatric knees for the purpose of training medical professionals and reducing the costs associated with knee effusion diagnosis. I was lucky enough to work with both Elizabeth Silvestro, MSE, and Michael Hast, PhD, and I have learned so much from them.
This experience has been dedicated to advancing injury research and prevention, providing me with valuable hands-on experience in various research areas. I have strengthened my skills in data collection, segmenting and analyzing MR imaging, and creating biofidelic models using 3D printing. I have also expanded my problem-solving skills, data analysis abilities, and fostered the development of new research ideas. I was lucky enough to assist with additional projects within the CHAMP lab while also networking and meeting new people within the CHOP community.
I would like to especially thank both the CHAMP and McKay teams for their unwavering support and welcoming environment they provided me. This entire experience has been nothing shy of a dream come true, and I am so grateful for all the doors this program opened for me."
