Research Experiences for Undergraduates Student (Summer 2024)
“This internship has taught me about research and was able to give me a stronger understanding of what I want to do in the future. I am a first-generation college student coming from a poor Latino family. Having an opportunity to be here means so much because I know so many people from my background do not have an opportunity like this. I was mentored by Lauren O’Malley, MPH and Emma Sartin, PhD, MPH, CPST who helped me throughout the program.
This summer, I was able to work on the ADHD research team where my role was similar to a Research Assistant. I did a lot of day-to-day tasks and worked directly with participants. I was able to perform screening calls where I spoke to participants about their eligibility, their child's ADHD symptoms and getting their consent. Another larger task was inputting data into REDCap. I would also compensate participants for completing surveys, as well as delivering survey reminders for those who did not complete them.
CIRP has taught me a lot. I was able to get a better understanding of research and how it is conducted. I was able to get a better understanding of study protocols, the importance of data collection, and a much better way of time management and understanding what task should be completed first. Being in this internship made me realize that I want to further my career in research. I hope to further my education into Psychology and even Public Health."
