Research Experiences for Undergraduates Student (Summer 2024)
"During my time at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention as an REU student, I worked closely with Elizabeth Silvestro, MSE and Michael Hast, PhD as a part of the Additive Manufacturing for Pediatrics 3D Lab at CHOP (CHAMP Lab) and the McKay Orthopedics Lab at the University of Pennsylvania.
My focus this summer was on the design and development of simulation trainers for pediatric knee effusion assessment. Specifically, I worked on computationally modeling the behavior of the pediatric knee during a clinician-performed patellar tap test as well as creating a family of trainers using additive manufacturing. Through this work, I strengthened and fine-tuned my skillset in finite element modeling and analysis, design and fabrication, mechanical testing, and data analysis. My initial interest in engineering design has flourished into my newfound passion that I am continuing to pursue.
My research experience was characterized by problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration while continuing to understand the intersection of biomedical engineering and research. While having limited research experience prior to this program, CHOP taught me about what research means and how impactful it can be to the lives of those around us. I was moved by the groundbreaking discoveries being made here on an everyday basis and honored to be a part of it. I can confidently say that after an experience such as this, research will be something that I will continue to surround myself with in future endeavors.
The network I now have from spending my summer at CHOP consists of peers and mentors from a multitude of fields that have created a welcoming and supportive environment that fostered my overall experience. The knowledge, wisdom, and experience I have gained from this program, as well as the people I’ve met along the way, has been invaluable to my education and my future."
