CIRP Senior Fellow

Akiva S. Cohen, PhD is a Principal Investigator at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute and a Senior Fellow at its Center for Injury Research and Prevention. He is also a Research Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Perelman School Of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Cohen’s research is focused on the fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie cognitive impairments associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI). He is particularly interested in alterations in neuronal excitability in the limbic system of the brain, which has been shown to play a primary role in higher cognitive function (e.g., learning and memory) and is damaged in TBI.

Dr. Cohen and his team incorporate a variety of techniques to understand the nature and functional consequences of injury-induced alterations. The long-term goal of this research is to direct the development of potential therapies that would improve cognitive dysfunction in TBI patients.
