At the Center for Violence Prevention (CVP), we have been fortunate to partner with the Philadelphia Eagles over the past several years on gun violence prevention efforts. This partnership has taken many forms, from the Eagles providing crucial funding support for CVP’s research and programs, to CVP Scholar Ruth Abaya, MD, MPH being selected as the Eagles representative for the inaugural NFL Changemaker Award, to the Eagles consulting CVP experts as they create and implement community initiatives.
In a continuation of this collaboration, today, the Philadelphia Eagles announced their 2024 “A Fan of Change” campaign, which highlights local nonprofits and community-based organizations, community members, Eagles players, and fans who are inspiring change. CVP is honored to be among the nine local organizations selected to receive support from the Eagles Social Justice Fund.
The campaign shines a spotlight on two of CVP’s programs: Growing Resilience in Teens (GRIT) and the Aggression and Bullying Prevention programs:
- GRIT is a collaboration with CHOP’s Healthier Together initiative and the Office of Community Impact. GRIT assesses patients ages 8 to 17 at select CHOP Primary Care centers for post-traumatic stress symptoms, depression, anxiety, and suicidality and connects families with support services when needed. This service is family-focused and needs are identified by each youth and family, allowing for individualized, tailored care and support. In 2023, there were over 450 trauma-based assessments from primary care. Approximately 40% were enrolled in CHOP’s Family Advocacy and Support (FAS) program, which provides community-based case management support to youth and families to help them navigate complex, complicated systems of care in Philadelphia, address concrete needs, and help children and families recover after exposure to trauma or violence.
- In more than 20-years of partnership with the School District of Philadelphia, our bullying prevention experts have designed, implemented, and evaluated programs that decrease aggression and promote social-emotional skills and healthy student-teacher relationships. Programs include:
- Friend to Friend: teaches problem-solving, anger management and leadership skills to 3rd–5th grade girls with accompanying lessons for their classmates.
- Bullying Classroom Check-Up: coaches 3rd–5th grade teachers to leverage classroom management strategies and trauma-informed instructional approaches to detect, prevent and respond to bullying and aggression and help students develop social-emotional skills.
- Preventing Aggression in Schools Everyday (PRAISE): Friendship Voyagers: a teacher-led classroom-based bullying prevention and social-emotional skill promotion program for 3rd–5th grade students.
- Preventing Aggression in Schools Everyday (PRAISE): Friendship Explorers: a newly developed teacher-led, classroom-based program for 1st and 2nd grade students.
We at CVP hope to continue our efforts in partnership with the Philadelphia Eagles to make our patients and neighborhoods safer and healthier.
