Today marks the 5th annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day, a day for honoring the memory of gun violence victims and acknowledging the public health epidemic of gun violence. CHOP's Center for Violence Prevention (CVP) (formerly Violence Prevention Initiative) is proud to support these efforts and thank our colleagues and partner organizations who work tirelessly to prioritize the safety of children and young adults. CVP's gun violence experts have developed an educational handout on gun safety tips for parents and caregivers. While the safest home for a child is a home without a gun, if a gun is present, it should be locked and stored unloaded, separate from ammunition. The handout provides options for safe storage of firearms, how to talk about gun safety with children and other adults, and relevant facts and statistics.
